3 Steps to COVID19 Take Home Tests

Step 1: Get Materials

All students will have the opportunity to pick up a box of the test kits on Thursday, Friday, and

Monday (November 17th, 18th, and 19th) at the schools throughout the day. This is a voluntary

program designed to provide students with easy access to COVID testing to assist with a safe return to school after vacations. Each student can receive two test kits that are intended to be used with the high school student and not other members of the family.

● Each person will get 2 tests. Some tests come two to a box and others are one per box.

Please make sure you have 2 tests

.

Step 2: Test your student (or yourself if you are a school employee)

● Take test #1: 3 days before returning to school (Friday, November 25, 2022)

● Take test #2: 1 day before returning to school (Sunday, November 27, 2022)

Step 3: If you test positive, take a picture of your test to provide to the school and call the office for directions on what to do next. If you do not test positive, you are free to come to school. However, if you have any COVID-19 symptoms and/or you have had a known exposure to someone with COVID-19, please call your school for next steps before you return.

Take-home covid tests

November 16, 2022

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

The Winter season is upon us and we will be taking a break to enjoy the holidays with family and friends.  As you are out and about, the chances of exposure to COVID 19 will be increased.  We want you all to fully enjoy this time off from school, but we also want to help ensure that upon returning to school, we are all healthy.  Our priority is to keep school open and our students safe.  Please help us in doing this by following the guidelines below:

Please take-home COVID-19 Rapid Tests. All students and school employees will receive free tests to use before returning to school after Thanksgiving Break. Take test #1: 3 days before returning to school (Friday, Nov 25, 2022 and take test #2 1 day before returning to school (Sunday, Nov 27, 2022.  More detailed information can be found by clicking this link: Take home tests link.

Be safe and have a great Break!

Masking while indoors on School Campuses (Basketball Games)

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,

After a successful return to our fall sports season, we are excited about the upcoming winter season that includes basketball, cheer, ski and snowboarding. The recent updates to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines for schools provided a modification that will allow our basketball players an option of COVID testing weekly instead of wearing a mask during periods of heavy exertion. So players now have the opportunity to test weekly and not wear a mask when on the court playing. This process has already started for our athletes.

The CDPH and County guidelines for schools still mandates all other individuals wear a mask while indoors on a school campus. We are asking all students, parents and community members to cooperate with this mandate as they come to cheer on their teams.  Remember that we are working to implement the mandates provided by the state and our school staff members are simply charged with the responsibility to implement and enforce these mandates. Your cooperation with the mandate allows us all to focus on the important and exciting task of supporting and cheering on our athletes.

The complete SUHSD Basketball COVID Policy and CDPH November 24 updated guidelines for schools can be found at this link:

SUHSD - Basketball COVID Protocols December 1, 2021 and CDPH revised guidance for schools

Sincerely,

Mike Matheson - Superintendent

Spring Athletics

WHS students are going to have the opportunity to play in some spring athletic tournaments in Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer. Attached you will find the schedules for these tournaments and an outline of the guidelines for participation in these athletic opportunities. For the indoor sports, all athletes must have a COVID Test. The district is set up to test our students with the BinaxNow Rapid test and will test our student athletes twice each week. Because Siskiyou County is in the Orange Tier, students must consent to take this test in order to participate. You can find information about this testing process on the SUHSD Guidelines for Spring Athletics. We will be meeting with our Athletes during advisory today and will provide them with a paper copy of the guidelines, COVID-19 Testing Authorization Form and Release of Liability, and the schedules.

Indoor sports audiences will be limited to two (2) parents per participating athlete. Athletes will be issued 2 tickets to give to parents.

These are non-league unofficial competitions

For our students in need, each campus will be providing afternoon credit recovery, tutoring, academic support and social emotional counseling services. Each campus will be notifying students and families about these programs and services which will be required for students as needed.

PRESS RELEASE - JANUARY 29, 2021

The Siskiyou Union High School District Board of Trustees held a special board meeting on Thursday, January 28th, 2021 and approved the following revision to our Reopening Plans. The summary of this revision includes:

  • Move to our Step 2 on Monday, February 22, 2021 with our Hybrid Learning Program and schedule.

  • Modify the current Hybrid Schedule to have a rotating on-campus group (A or B every other week) on Fridays rather than have an all distance learning day on Fridays.

  • Students will continue to have the option of staying on distance learning.

  • Moving our Spring Break back to the original calendared week of March 22, 2021.

  • Implement the State and CIF guidelines to start our athletic programs.

Here is a link to these revised plans and decision tree. SUHSD Reopening Plan Rev. 1/28/21

School sites will be preparing for this February 22 opening and hybrid schedule. They will be asking parents to indicate if they want their student to participate in the hybrid program or remain on distance learning.

Hybrid Opening Date

Dear Students and Parents of Happy Camp, McCloud, Mount Shasta and Weed High Schools,

At the SUHSD January 13th Board of Trustees meeting, the board made the decision to adopt the attached modifications to our Reopening Plans. In summary the revisions include:

  • A projected move to our Step 2, which includes our Hybrid Learning Model (with the option of a student staying on Distance Learning) on Monday March 15, 2021.

  • To increase the face to face time in the step 2 hybrid model, we will move Spring Break from the week of March 22, 2021, to the week of March 8th, 2021. This will place the week of Spring Break within the six-week post vaccination time and provide an additional week of the step 2 hybrid model.

  • At any time (even before Monday March 15th) that Siskiyou County were to move out of Tier 1 (widespread) to Tier 2 (substantial), we would give a 2 week notice that we are moving to our step 2 with the hybrid model.

These changes are included in the attached version of our full reopening plan and decision tree.

Link to SUHSD Phased Reopening Plan REV 01.13.2021

Note: Recent developments with the Siskiyou County Vaccination process are likely going to provide an opportunity for earlier vaccination options and we are developing a new plan to move to step 2 and open in hybrid on February 22, 2021 following our Presidents week vacation. This new plan would not change the current Spring Break as indicated in the above board decision. We will provide more information as this potential plan develops later next week.

Sincerely,

Mike Matheson

Moving Back to step 1 distance learning

Dear Students and Families,

Today it was announced that Siskiyou County has moved from Tier 3 (orange) to the most restrictive Tier 1 (purple) and the Governor has announced new immediate actions to curb COVID-19 Transmission.  Please see the Siskiyou County Press Release Here. In accordance with the SUHSD Reopening Plan and out of an abundance of caution, all schools in the Siskiyou Union High School District will return to Step 1: Distance Learning effective immediately  (Tuesday, November 17, 2020). During this time all students will participate in distance learning from home following the current bell schedule. This is a difficult decision that is based on the continued rise in cases in the county as well as a variety of cases that we are monitoring within the families of our students and staff.

At this time, we do not have any specific information about possible student exposure at school. However, this is an evolving situation. Siskiyou Union High School District will continue to work closely with our school nurses as well as the county public health department to determine when it will be safe to return to Step 2 of our plan. As new information becomes available, we will inform you of any specific steps that may need to be taken.

We recognize that our students and families will continue to need support through these difficult times and the upcoming holiday season. We encourage students and families to continue to use all necessary precautions and monitor for symptoms related to COVID-19. Please reach out to school teachers and support staff for connectivity, academic, and social emotional support. We have resources available and will be working to deploy needed resources and support for our students and families. Please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Mike Matheson

Step 2 Hybrid Schedule will start on November 9th

Dear Students and Families,

On Monday, November 9th 2020, we will be moving to step 2 of our opening plan. Step 2 will include a new hybrid schedule that will have 50% of our students on campus at a time for face to face in person instruction. We have divided our students into three groups. Group A, B, and D. Group A will be coming to school on Monday and Tuesday, Group B will be coming to school on Wednesday and Thursday, and Group D are students that have decided to remain on distance learning. We will be letting students and parents know which group they are in early next week. When students are at home, or students that have decided to stay on distance learning (group D), they will be required to zoom into each of their classes for a live feed of the teacher providing presentations, demonstrations and lectures. All materials will continue to be available on-line.Fridays will be an all 8 period full distance learning day.

The full hybrid schedule is linked here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/10th7LfLj8nNfM24mPkbWhLaL93MdeL234PyR-fGpi3k/edit?usp=sharing

As students come back to school, they will be required to follow our policies designed to minimize the risks of getting sick with COVID or other common colds and flu. Please see the on-campuses procedures linked here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QTQ-HZduj8fSxcoflOI93AcPe_3NZjs6NQaNdX9hGUI/edit?usp=sharing

The basic on campus procedures include:

  • Before you leave home, complete the SUHSD COVID-19 Daily Screening Questionnaire

  • Bring all materials in a backpack. Lockers are not available for use.

  • Wear a mask at all times (indoors and outdoors).

  • Social distance at all times (halls, classrooms, gyms, outdoor spaces).

  • Follow traffic flow directions - always walk on the right side of halls and corridors.

  • Do not share materials, equipment, hydration containers, or any other items with others.

  • All restrooms are single occupancy - one person at a time.

  • Sanitize your hands as you enter each outside door and classroom.

  • Wipe down your desk/station before and after use. Each room has alcohol based wipes for this purpose.

  • Wipe down all equipment that you have used prior to leaving a station or room

We are excited to have our students back on campus and look forward to working with our students and families to continue their educational process in a safe and productive manner.

Sincerely,

Mike Matheson

SCHOOL OPENING DETAILS

Dear WHS Students and Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful, healthy summer. I am excited to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year at Weed High School. I am looking forward to a year of learning, connecting, and preparing for our future together

On August 6th, 2020 the SUHSD Board of Trustees voted to start the school year at step 1 of the District 3-Step Reopening Plan. We have listened to student, parent and staff feedback about distance learning during the fourth quarter last spring and are planning a number of structural and pedagogical improvements that will strengthen our distance learning program. The Weed High School staff is committed to working with students and families to meet the needs of each student and to provide equitable access to everything WHS has to offer.

The 2020-2021 school year presents many unique challenges for all schools, including Weed High School. We all miss being at school and interacting with each other in person. It saddens all of us that so many of our school traditions have been put on hold for the time being. By working together, I know we can make school this year safe, engaging, and memorable for all our students.

This year, more than ever, we will rely on Aeries Communications for communicating important school information to students and families. If you have not already, please take a few moments to login to your Aeries student account or parent portal and check your communication preferences. It is highly recommended that your turn on notifications by SMS text message. This way, you will be sure to see all of our school communications on your phone.

If you require assistance with accessing your Aeries student account or parent portal, please contact the WHS office at 530-938-4774.

April 4, 2020 Update

I would like to take the opportunity to assure students and parents that although our campuses are closed, we remain committed to providing quality educational experiences and opportunities for all of our students. Through our Distance Learning Program, we will keep our students connected to their schools and teachers and help them avoid the sense of isolation that these unprecedented times have created. While our primary purpose will be to provide our students with connections to their schools and teachers, we will also provide academic continuity, tutoring and academic support, social emotional support and counseling, college and career guidance, and a variety of online group activities. We realize that there are questions regarding grading and credits for graduation and college entrance, activities such as athletics, performances, and graduations. We will be making decisions about these important issues and activities as further information and direction comes from the county and state. We encourage students and families to follow all of the stay at home and social distancing orders so we can beat this pandemic and eventually return to our normal lives and activities. We care about our students, families, and staff and hope that everyone stays healthy and safe.and staff and hope that everyone stays healthy and safe.and staff and hope that everyone stays healthy and safe.We encourage students and families to follow all of the stay at home and social distancing orders so we can beat this pandemic and eventually return to our normal lives and activities. I will be holding an information meeting today at 2:00 pm via Zoom. Please join me so I can answer any questions that you may have and continue to gather feedback from you so we can make our Distance Learning Program work for you. My office Zoom meeting at 2:00 pm today is:  https://sisuhsd.zoom.us/j/881213975. I will post a recording of this meeting and will hold others at a later date.

Please join me and do not hesitate to email or call me with your questions, ideas and concerns.

April 1, 2020 Update

It was great to see so many of you connecting with your teachers and peers during our first day of our Distance Learning Program. Only 22 students didn't connect at all. This is encouraging and we thank you for your continued commitment to Weed High School and your educational process. Remember that this week is about getting everyone connected and ready to go. Please let your teachers know what you need in the way of materials and help. I recognize that this is not an easy time or process but we are here to help.

Help and Needs:
You can use this Online Help Form to let us know what you need or you can call the school at 938-4774. Emily will answer and be able to get you help.

March 27, 2020 Update

Good Morning,

I hope this message finds you doing well during this unprecedented time. On Tuesday March 31, 2020 we will start distance learning at Weed High School. This is a guide to help get everyone up and running.

It is important that students check their school email at least once every day. Families should also keep an eye on their email and SMS for messages from the school.

In the next few days, students will receive an email from Zoom inviting them to create an account. All students should follow the directions in this email to create a Zoom account for their school email address before Tuesday, March 31, 2020 so that they are ready to start distance learning.

Next week will be our ramp up week for distance learning.

The goals for the week are to:

  • Get students connected to their teachers using Zoom, our distance learning platform.

  • Help students and families who are having technical difficulty or that need assistance with internet access.

  • Answer any questions we can about how to access learning, social and emotional support and nutrition support through our school while we are distance learning.

Students - How to attend your distance learning classes and what to expect

  1. First, see the distance learning schedule so that you know what days/time each of your classes meets.

  2. Each of your teachers has created a “Zoom classroom” where your class will be held. To join the class you will need to click the link to your teacher’s classroom. You can find all of your teachers’ Zoom classroom links here. You will also find a button that will take you to all the Zoom classrooms at WHS on our website at www.weedhighschool.com.

    1. If you are not able to join by computer but do have access to a phone you can also join your Zoom classrooms by phone using the instructions in the link above.

    2. If you are not able to attend a class meeting by computer or phone, see the information in the link above about how to stay caught up with what is happening in your class.

  3. Be sure to review the video conference etiquette guide so that you understand the expectations while you are in your Zoom classrooms.

  4. When your class is finished, you will leave the Zoom meeting. When it is time for your next class to start you will join that class's Zoom classroom by clicking the link for your next teacher’s class.

What is distance learning going to be like?

  • Distance learning is new to all of us and not the same thing as attending classes at school. If you are ever experiencing a challenge with any part of your distance learning experience, please let your teacher know right away. We want to work with you to make distance learning work for you.

  • Your classes will be shorter than at school. Each class may not use the entire 50 minutes scheduled for the class.

  • At a minimum, each class meeting will have a check-in, instructions for an assignment and a chance to ask questions.

  • Class meetings may also have a lecture, discussion, student presentations, group work, and/or a quiz or test.

  • You will complete most of your work independently. If your class meeting is shorter than 50 minutes, be sure to use the remaining time to work on assignments. Also use your mornings and afternoons to work on your assignments.

What are office hours?

  • Office hours are a scheduled time each day when you can get one on one or small group help from your teachers.

  • Your teachers will tell you how you can make appointments with them during office hours.

  • Office hour meetings will be in Zoom classrooms using the same links you use for class meetings.

How else can I contact my teachers?

  • The best way to contact your teachers outside of class time and office hours is via email. Please feel free to email your teachers anytime.

Students and Families - Where to get assistance with distance learning

  • If you need technical assistance with your Chromebook please contact Tambi at tschnack@sisuhsd.net

  • If you do not have internet access at home please contact Tambi or Emily so that we can help you secure internet access for school.

  • We will continue to deliver lunches according to the schedule we were using last week.

  • We will also develop a delivery schedule for needed school supplies. Please let your teacher know of you need any materials from school and we will deliver them to you.

Your feedback on how distance learning is going is really important. If you have ideas that could help us improve our distance learning system, concerns about a challenge you are facing, or a success story that you would like to share, please send your feedback to Principal Matheson at mmatheson@sisuhsd.net.

Thank you for your flexibility during this challenging time. Our goal is to provide the best possible educational experience and social emotional support we can for all of our students while we work through the time that our campus is closed.

Weed High School is committed to partnering with you as we work through the challenges ahead. We are all in this together and will rise, together, to this moment.

Dear students and families,

The situation regarding COVID-19 and our local schools is rapidly evolving. Based on recommendations and information from the State Department of Education and in alignment with many schools in California, the Siskiyou Union High School District schools (Happy Camp, McCloud, Mount Shasta, Weed) will close starting Monday, March 16, 2020 through Monday March 30, 2020. To prepare for the possibility of an extended closure beyond March 30, 2020, students should plan to come to campus between 10am and 2pm on either Monday or Tuesday to pick-up any books and materials that they may need for their classes, that they have left in their lockers or in other places on campus. Teachers will reach out as soon as possible Monday morning if students will need to pick up materials for their classes. Students must also check that they have a working Chromebook and charger. If not, they should see Lula in the Library to check out this technology.

These are extraordinary times. Thank you for your flexibility. I will be sending out additional information to the MSHS community as it becomes available.  We are developing plans to provide students with meals during regularly scheduled school days. SUHSD is dedicated to supporting students as we work through this challenging situation.

Dear families and friends,

We are moving into some very unknown and difficult times that are going to take community, state, federal, and international cooperation to address and overcome. Working together with neighboring school districts we will effectively take on these challenges.

After careful consideration and coordination among Butteville Union Elementary School District, Dunsmuir Elementary School District, Dunsmuir Joint Union High School District, Happy Camp Union Elementary School District, Mount Shasta Union School District, Siskiyou Union High School District, and Weed Elementary School District, we have decided to keep school open on Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17. School will close on Wednesday, March 18, and will remain closed through Monday, March 30. At this time, we are planning to have students return to school on Tuesday, March 31. We will communicate any change to this plan on our websites, messaging channels, and through local media.

During the closure it is important for students to practice universal precautions including hand washing for 20 seconds with soap and lots of friction, using hand sanitizer when hand washing is not feasible,  covering the mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing, as well as practicing social separation.

On Thursday I, along with school officials from around the county, the county public health department and the country superintendent of schools held a public health meeting to discuss the COVID-19 and school preparedness. Public Health Department officials gave us an update and current status of the Coronavirus in Siskiyou County.

This included the following points:

  • At the time of the meeting there are no diagnosed cases of COVID-19 in Siskiyou County.

  • Mount Shasta and Yreka hospitals have COVID-19 tests and are beginning to test.

  • County public health officials stated that COVID-19 is in the county and probably has been here for a while.

  • School districts and county public health officials will make continuing decisions about school closures in collaboration as information from testing starts to become available.

  • It is better to make decisions on the side of caution in order to “flatten the curve” for infection rate. Here is a good article on the idea of flattening the curve.

From the information provided we are implementing the following interim measures:

  • Closing schools On March 18 though Monday March 30. Students will have access to their school meal options during the closure.

  • Canceling all athletic events, home and away, as well as practice during the duration of the closure. State CIF is meeting on Tuesday, March 17, to discuss statewide measures regarding athletics.

  • Postpone all student field trips until further notice.

  • Implement State of California  gathering guidelines as follows:

    • Large gatherings that include 250 people or more should be postponed or canceled. This includes gatherings such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college, and school sporting events.

    • Smaller gatherings held in venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person should be postponed or canceled.  This includes gatherings in crowded auditoriums, rooms or other venues.

  • Develop a district plan to prepare for additional school closures that extend beyond March 30.

    • Internet based courses using Google Classroom, Zoom, and other online tools.

    • A method of providing students who do not have internet with internet access.

    • Access and support for teachers in the online environment including technology, etc.

Information is changing by the moment, and we will continue to work closely with the County Office of Education and health officials to develop plans and respond to this pandemic. We will keep you informed as we continue to gather information and develop plans. We need your help and ideas so please do not hesitate to email or call as you see or think of needed actions.

Sincerely,

Mike Matheson and the District Cabinet

The training and drills are designed to provide our students with an understanding of "situational awareness," and a series of options that could be implemented if a tragic event were to happen at school or other community venue. The training and drills can bring up an emotional response and can feel scary. Please review the drill dates and the presentation linked here and on our website. Check in with your students and discuss the topics of safety and the ALICE options.
